in los angeles

This last weekend I left the single digit weather of Wisconsin to shoot a story in the 60-degree weather of Los Angeles. Shock to the system but it was great! Now I am back in Wisconsin anticipating up to 12 inches of snow…

The Story:

Through the years God used InterVarsity bible studies, mentorship, and manuscript studies to tug at Scott’s heart and break it for the injustices of the world. Along the way, Scott went to Urbana, an InterVarsity Christian Fellowship Missions Conference, where he got connected with Servant Partners. Scott is now working with Servant Partners and living in among his neighbors in South LA. For Urbana 09, we (2100 productions) are traveling to at least 3 other places where people are doing the work of God, we want to tell Gods story of how he is using ordinary people for great things.

The Photography:

One of the ways we want to tell the above story is to create portraits to run as full page adds in several Christian magazines. We wanted to capture the people that God is using in the environments that he has placed them. So we walked around Scott’s neighborhood early in the morning (good light) and conducted simple portraits. I tried to keep it simple and easy to read, hopefully these images will be striking enough to cause people to stop and read the accompanying story.





This was a fun shoot; with all the elements we had a blast. But it was also fun because I have met Scott before; he was student at a neighboring college when I was on Volunteer Staff; I saw him at conferences, he was in am Amos study with Sarah and his staff workers were good friends of mine. So it was also a great time to catch up.

Luke and Kelsey are getting married in the middle of winter, but we thought that we would have their portraits done in the fall. Luke has had is eye on this particular grove for a while and has been waiting for all the leaves to turn golden yellow. It was worth both the wait as well as the cold. Can’s wait to photograph this wedding.

After almost a year absence, the many feathered birds of the Midwest are back on our balcony…I think it is mostly due to Sarah’s bird-feeder and its new treats. I haven’t seen any birds eating from its bounty yet but the evidence is conclusive that they have found the apricot strawberry goodness in the feeder and are liking the new nutrition.

thanksgiving 2008

This year, Sarah and I hosted Thanksgiving at our house. We invited anyone that was not going home to join us for a huge turkey (Sarah got a 20lb-er) and way more food than necessary. We all comforted each other in missing home since all of us have family out of state, so we made due with friends.

And this marks the beginning of the 2009 Wedding Season…oh let it begin!

Part of the Blackhawk photo group, we met at the Token Creek Co Park this last week to see what we could find. I learned that I need a better system of warming my hands, we will see what Santa brings this year. It was fun, what else would it be? Went to brunch after with Todd and got the best cheese-egg-hash brown-skillet scramble ever!

atlanta 2100 shoot

Lat week, I went on a video trip to Atlanta Georgia with a couple coworkers to capture stories to be told at InterVarsity’s Following Christ Conference this winter. Along the way we saw the city, ate good BBQ and also got to observe an amazing string quartet at Fringe, “Fringe is about art—about crossing social, cultural, and ethnic divides through music by purposely melding worlds to create something entirely new.” [see their website]

Natalie and Brandon

This was one of the most special weddings (most special? is that right? well you get the idea) I have photographed this year for the sole reason that I went to school with Natalie, Brandon and half the bridal party…I even married the maid of honor! Anyway, it was a blast to capture, and an honor to participate in, thanks again guys for including me in your great day. Since this was the last wedding of the year, I can’t think of a better way to end the 2008 wedding season!!
